I am an independent adviser working on my own account. I help owners and managers of small and mid-sized organisations see their work more clearly, tidy up how things get done, and decide what to do next — without the jargon and without a long report nobody reads. I listen first, then I recommend.
I am a general business adviser, not a specialist in any one trade. Owners bring me in when something is not working as smoothly as it should, when they want a second, disinterested opinion, or simply when they are too close to the day-to-day to see it plainly. I look at how the work actually flows, talk to the people doing it, and come back with a small number of changes worth making.
A calm, outside look at how the work gets done — where it snags, where effort is wasted, and what would genuinely make a difference.
Untangling the steps a job takes so it is simpler, quicker and less dependent on any one person remembering how it goes.
Rolling up my sleeves for a spell when there is a gap to cover or a change to see through — steadying things rather than just advising on them.
Unhurried, and in plain language. I spend the first part of any engagement listening and looking before I suggest anything — because advice given before you understand the place is usually wrong.
I start by understanding how things really work — talking to the people involved and watching the day-to-day, not just reading the org chart.
I set out what I have found in plain terms, and separate the few things that matter from the many that do not.
I keep recommendations short and practical — the sort a busy owner will actually act on — and I stay available while they are put into effect.
I work with a small number of clients at a time, so each one gets proper attention. Most of my work is done single-handed; when a piece of work genuinely needs more hands, I bring in a trusted associate rather than pretend otherwise.
The specifics differ from one organisation to the next, but the questions tend to rhyme. These are the sorts of things owners ask me to look at.
Work that has grown complicated over the years, with steps nobody quite remembers the reason for. I help trace it back to something simpler.
When too much lives in one head, I help write down how things are done so the organisation is steadier and less exposed.
A measured, outside opinion from someone with no stake in the answer and nothing to sell — just an honest read of what is in front of us.
A sensible second look before a move that would be costly to get wrong, and a steady hand while the change is carried out.
Interim, hands-on help for a defined stretch — keeping things running and handing back cleanly when the need has passed.
Turning how things are done into something plain and usable, so it can be followed, handed over and improved without me in the room.
I would rather be clear about this up front than have it come as a surprise later. I offer general business advice, and nothing more regulated than that. If what you need falls into one of the areas below, the right thing is a qualified professional in that field — and I am happy to say so plainly and, where I can, point you toward one.
Keeping to what I actually do well is, to my mind, part of doing the job properly.
If something above sounds like the position you are in, write to me and tell me a little about it — roughly what the organisation does, and what has prompted you to look for an outside view. There is no charge for an initial exchange to work out whether I am the right person to help.
Email [email protected] and I will normally reply within a working day or two.
